So far, it's a battle just to keep the little forest creatures out. Yesterday there was a fuzzy rabbit lying right where I planted the carrots! How did he know? And a crew of squirrels from the jungle next door seem endlessly fascinated by the corn seeds.
To help with that, J.D. bought me a plastic owl from Home Depot to scare them away. I call him Hooty. He sits on our deck surveying the garden right now. But, I'm not so sure Hooty works because I saw a squirrel on the opposite deck end, having a stare-down with him. Eventually the squirrel ran away. (It's difficult to win a stare-down with a glass-eyed creature). I also sprayed pepper oil on the ground to help discourage those silly squirrels.
Every morning after changing his diaper, Jonathan and I look out the window to make sure no squirrels are eating our future garden.

I feel so bad! I have a tiller I could have let you either borrow or have....wow, that is some backbreaking labor!
I love the idea of you guys on squirrel patrol---mostly because we do it with the opposite intention, getting the most squirrels possible into our yard! (hey that's why we never manage to grow anything decent, right?!)
Laughingly,
Catherine
The picture makes the space look bigger than it actually is... everything is pretty packed in. It would be fun to feed them, to Hooty!
