On Thursday J.D. and I went to the Botanical Garden to see the lilies in their supposed prime. Some of them were as tall as J.D. But I think they were past their prime in terms of blooming. We did see some nice gladiolas. I liked the orange-red ones, but I forgot to take my camera. When I wrote "Botanical Gardens" just now I thought... isn't that a bit redundant? I suppose they're just being specific. It's certainly not a mechanical garden or cat garden (Thena is currently meowing her head off at me). I suppose they mean botanical, as in the garden's scientific uses, its relation to the study of botany and such ??? Someday I'm gonna have me a "plant garden" yep.
Anyway, I'm feeling very Byronic today, in the Don Juan way, which is not to say cannibalistic or even dog-eating for that matter, nor Wordsworth-hating, but merely roundabout and silly.
We've recently seen quite a few movies. We went to The Dark Knight on Friday. It's ok. I know it's probably blasphemous to all the raving critics, but I liked Batman Begins better in terms of its storytelling. Although, J.D. really liked the movie. (I didn't dislike it). It just wasn't as fabulous to me as to everyone else.
I did really enjoy watching, through Netflix, Amelie. It's a movie that I would like to own. I would put it in my top 10 or even top 5. It's a sweet and funny film. I won't say too much about it, in case people haven't seen it and want to. There's some sexual content, which is the only reason I can understand its R rating.

I am so so so lucky to have you as my dear friend!
Sometimes I think I am the only person in the whole world who sits and ponders things like the redundancy of terms like "Botanic Garden." For me this weekend it was why stupid people put possessives on their outdoor house nameplates (ie, "The Smith's"). I always wonder whether the Smith family understands that they are broadcasting their inability to grasp possessives---in my mind the sign indicates that they are the Smiths as a group--but then I think maybe instead the Smith's are alerting the world to the fact that the house is indeed possessed by the Smith clan. So maybe it is, after all, correct in the strictest and most technical sense.
For that reason, I loved reading this wonderful post!!!! It has made me smile, and made me think, ah, this is why we do what we do, and why I am so lucky to have found a kindred spirit in this world.
I think I just saw Amelie - is it the one with the traveling gnome? Wait, and it had Ewan McGregor (and his pigeons) too, huh, that's was why I netflixxed it in the first place. Very cute little movie.
PS--
Plus, as an academic, sometimes I like to be snarky about words and stuff (to paraphrase Nacho Libre). It justifies (or at least makes me feel a little better about) being so overworked and underpaid.
Yeah, it has the gnome she sends around the world for her dad. I wish I could think of things like that to make people happy.
As for silly names, I would have the sign broadcasting that the Taylors' live here, but I haven't found anyone willing to make it for me yet. Because honestly, what's better than a possessive or a plural... that's right, a plural possessive! Then we let people know there's a group of us, and we own stuff.
