Here is my sketch of the garden I recently planted after J.D. broke up all the soil by shovel. It's my first attempt at a real garden of our own. I hope something grows! (I also hopefully planted things a little straighter than I can draw!) We'll see.
So far, it's a battle just to keep the little forest creatures out. Yesterday there was a fuzzy rabbit lying right where I planted the carrots! How did he know? And a crew of squirrels from the jungle next door seem endlessly fascinated by the corn seeds.
To help with that, J.D. bought me a plastic owl from Home Depot to scare them away. I call him Hooty. He sits on our deck surveying the garden right now. But, I'm not so sure Hooty works because I saw a squirrel on the opposite deck end, having a stare-down with him. Eventually the squirrel ran away. (It's difficult to win a stare-down with a glass-eyed creature). I also sprayed pepper oil on the ground to help discourage those silly squirrels.
Every morning after changing his diaper, Jonathan and I look out the window to make sure no squirrels are eating our future garden.
