Going for the Gold

All Contraception defined as Abortion:
http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/blog/2008/07/15/hhs-moves-define-contraception-abortion

Is it just me, or is this truly scary? I can't believe that such extremes are seen as even plausible in 2008. The control this would assert over women's lives and bodies would be devastating. Also, this shows tremendous ignorance about the health issues and concerns of women with conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which necessitates taking birth control to avoid all sorts of serious health problems.

I'm about as pro-life as I can be and I agree that this is too much. Recently, my doctor wanted to know what form of birth control I wanted to prevent another pregnancy while I'm breast feeding and recovering from the C-section. Having learned that most forms of birth control not only prevent sperm from reaching the egg, but also prevent fertilized eggs from implanting on the uterus, I told him none for me right now. I don't want the chemicals or foreign objects in me, but also, believing that life begins at conception, I don't want to prevent life. BUT THIS IS A PERSONAL CHOICE (does that make me pro-choice?).

I have a SIL who's been on the Pill most of her life because it helps with endometriosis. My very pro-life church doesn't tell women not to use birth control, and, if you read the official statements, is NOT against abortion, under specific circumstances.

YES abortion is often a terrible thing, but there is an extreme difference between terminating a microscopic bundle of cells and a fetus that would be able to live on its own in a few more weeks. And sometimes it's going to come down to aborting a child and saving a mother or losing both. We can not make all abortion illegal - it is short sighted and ignorant. I do wish it could be more rigidly controlled, with adoption highly encouraged and possibly subsidized - not so much as to be profitable, but enough to make people consider the personal sacrifice.

I'm not sure how much of the link is hype or not, but it's just far too extreme as a basic premise.

Yeah, the labels "pro-choice" and "pro-life" always crack me up. Obviously, no one is going to go around saying, "Yes, I'm anti-life." Or "I choose to be anti-choice." Labels, like absolutes, fail to capture complexity.

Hi Tammy --
So I never posted on your very sweet 7th anniversary blog entry, but I've been meaning to:
1. Congratulations :). You two are pretty darn cute. And I've been using some of the advice you mentioned.
2. I just realized (well, back in June), that your coming to my wedding meant missing your own anniversary. Tammy, you are as kind and true as a friend can be. Thank you-- hjg
