Ooooh! I want to answer so many of these!
If you want to, go ahead because I don't think anyone else is going to. :)
Ooh! A chance to be utterly obnoxious! Thank you!
2. In the NT, who was Malchus? A one eared servant
3. Who came to see Jesus privately at night? Nichodemus
4. Who was Obed's mother? Ruth. Boaz was his dad. Jesse was his son and David his grandson.
5. According to Luke, how many generations were there from Adam to Jesus? No clue other than a whole lot.
6. Who died in the OT when his bowels fell out? King Eglon of Moab? I may be thinking of the wrong incident, because I’m thinking of the one where “the dirt came out.”
8. Name the mother of Boaz. Rahab
9. Name the most famous son of Jochebed. Aaron’s less smooth talking brother who married an Ethiopian
10. Give two other first names by which Peter was sometimes called. Simon, . . . umm . . . the Rock?
12. What woman in the OT was described as having weak eyes? No clue.
13. Whose home was Jesus visiting when he was anointed with spikenard? Simon the Pharisee (Well, I think that is the answer they are looking for, but in the book of John, his feet are anointed with perfume at the house of Mary, Martha and Lazarus.)
14. Which son of Noah saw his father's drunken nakedness? Ham
15. Here's a family: Hosea, Gomer, Lo-ruhamah. How were they related? Hosea is a prophet. Gomer is his wife and maybe a prostitute. Lo-ruhamah is their daughter and her name basically means “no pity.” His children all had equally embarrassing names. One really hopes there weren’t playgrounds to be taunted on yet.
16. Who was Ahab's wife? Jezebel
17. Name the sister-in-law of Orpah. Ruth
19. Who (other than Eve) is the first recorded thief in the Bible? Um, no clue, because, sheesh, who wasn’t?
20. Who was Rachel's firstborn son? Joseph
23. Who was the adopted daughter of Mordecai? Esther
24. Who lived to be 962 years old? Methuselah
It is Simon the Pharisee in Luke (chapter 7).
Sorry I didn't have time to get to these earlier.
5. According to Luke, how many generations were there from Adam to Jesus? No clue other than a whole lot.
75
6. Who died in the OT when his bowels fell out? King Eglon of Moab? I may be thinking of the wrong incident, because I’m thinking of the one where “the dirt came out.”
I'm sure you're right. Like my original comment was "There was only one?" Seems like I remember people having this particular problem frequently. The one they were after was Jehoram (2 Chron. 21:19). I had never heard of him. Evidently, the LORD smites him with a disease in his bowels and they fall out from his sickness. Lovely.
10. Give two other first names by which Peter was sometimes called. Simon, . . . umm . . . the Rock?
I like this response, and technically you're right. Simon and Cephas, which is translated "A stone" (John 1:42). I'm going to put this one in the right category.
12. What woman in the OT was described as having weak eyes? No clue.
You know, I really should look up all of these questions before hand. I did that earlier but not this time for reasons of laziness and trying to do other stuff. This question is really garbage. It's supposed to be Leah. When I first read it I thought, "Oh, ok that must be why Jacob didn't love her as much as Rachel," but NO. In the KJV it doesn't say "weak eyed" it says "tender eyed," which is totally different. In the NRSV it says Leah had "lovely eyes" (Gen 29:17).
19. Who (other than Eve) is the first recorded thief in the Bible? Um, no clue, because, sheesh, who wasn’t?
Again, as Catherine and I discussed, this question is pretty dumb. What did Eve supposedly steal anyway, the apple? They had the answer Rachel -- when she steals her father's idols (Gen 31:19). Again, it seems like another instance in the questions of the wonderful "blame the woman" motif.
24. Who lived to be 962 years old? Methuselah
This is a total trick question. Jared (Gen 5:20). Methuselah was 969 (Gen 5:27). So close Jared, too bad no one cares about second place.
5. According to Luke, how many generations were there from Adam to Jesus? - 75
On this one I think the author in his thing for trivia missed the point. Jesus is the 77th generation. (God being the first.) Seven was the perfect number in the ancient world. It's why we have lists like the seven wonders of the world, seven days of creation, etc. In Luke's geneology, the seventh generation is always more important than the fifth. To be the 77th generation is powerful. 75 is numerically insignificant.
Definite problem with the first thief answer. Sure Rachel steals a few idols, but her husband Jacob did steal his brother's inheritance and blessing some years pior to that.
